For 4 years I have owned and operated www.BarParts.com  selling wine accessories and barware.

I was on all the search engines, but never placed very high on any of them.

I bought books, spent money on automation systems that were going to rank me high up on all the engines. I constantly adjusted keywords, meta tags, descriptions and studied the engines trying to decipher the secret code which was going to place me at the top. . . . All to no avail!

Then I thought - if I owned a search engine, what would I look for? 

As a search engine owner, my income would depend on what I could generate through advertising, and my advertising rate would depend on how many people used my search engine. Therefore, the only way to keep people coming back would be to make sure that any results of their searches would be as specific to their search as possible. If someone were looking for dogs, a website devoted to dogs would place higher than a site devoted to cats AND dogs OR pets. It is my belief that this is the object behind all the search engines regardless of the algorithm they use to achieve this.

I decided that as I sold over 250 items, the reason that my site didn't place well was that I was attempting to do too much and was not specific enough in my approach. 

I decided to build mini sites that were very specific to my keywords and that would give good information about what my keywords represented and then redirect people to my site at www.BarParts.com

Here's how you can to this to yourself:

Let me tell you first what a mini site should NOT be. It should not be a page of keywords, meta tags and alt. tags that are placed there just to try and rank high in the engine. Remember what the engines want - relevant content. They are very sophisticated, and can't route out or ignore many common tricks.

A good mini site should have a least 4 pages of content plus a page for links. Search engines for some reason want to see links. Find links in your area of expertise but not direct competitors. The name of your mini site MUST contain your keyword as that is one of the parts of the algorithm that all engines look for for content.

One of the items that I sell is Wine Decanters. I decided to build a website for decanters, but the domain name decanters,com was already taken. I therefore bought the domain name www.1stdecanters.com and set out to build a website devoted to wine decanting. I buy my domain names for $13.95 per year from www.123cheapdomains.com but there are many inexpensive places on the Internet to buy them.

If you look at the site www.1stdecanters.com you will see that it isn't a sales presentation for wine decanters. It consists of 4 pages and gives content on decanting wine. This is very important . . . your gateway sites can't just be pages . . . they need to look like a web site to the search engines. Also, the sales copy is specific to wine decanters only. There is also a page of links to sites in the wine industry, and the only competition is me! The home page does give you a chance to buy decanters and sends you to www.barparts.com.  

How well does this work? Go to www.google.com, which has become one of the foremost search engines on the Internet. Type in Wine Decanters and you will see that www.1stdecanters.com holds the #1 and #2 positions out of 16000 sites. Interestingly enough, suddenly www.barparts.com moved up to #3 where it never appeared before. It may have to do with their algorithm that any links of their top sites are more relevant. I really don't know, but that is an assumption. When someone goes to www.google.com I now have the first 3 chances for their business in Wine Decanters.

The site is hosted at www.1dollarhosting.com which costs $61 the first rear and $12 every year thereafter.

So, for $13.95 for a domain name, and $12 per year for hosting, you will have invested $25.95 per YEAR for 24/7 advertising for your site. 


How many sales would it take you to get a good Return On Investment with that?
